Profesorka, pracuje w Katedrze Antropologii Literatury i Badań Kulturowych WP UJ, współzałożycielka i pierwsza kierowniczka (2014-2024) Ośrodka Badań nad Kulturami Pamięci. Zajmuje się teoriami i praktykami badań kulturowych, w tym zwłaszcza studiami nad kulturą wizualną i kulturami pamięci. Autorka książek Nowoczesny esej. Studium historycznej świadomości gatunku (Kraków 2006), Od kultury ja do kultury siebie (Kraków 2015) oraz Poza obozem. Nie-miejsca pamięci – próba rozpoznania (Warszawa 2021). Współredaktorka kilku tomów na temat badań nad pamięcią oraz tomu Widok zza bliska. Inne obrazy Zagłady [wersja angielska: Terribly Close. Polish Vernacular Artist Face the Holocaust] (Krytyka Polityczna, Warszawa 2023).
Stypendystka Fundacji Kościuszkowskiej, Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation, ERSTE Stiftung, European Holocaust Research Infrastructure oraz DAAD. W 2011 uczyła na University of Chicago. Pracuje w zespole redakcyjnym serii Nowa Humanistyka (IBL PAN). Kierowała grantem Awkward Objects of Genocide w ramach projektu Transmitting Contentious Cultural Heritages with the Arts: From Intervention to Co-Production (Horyzont 2020, Reflective Society, 2016-2019). Prowadziła zespół badawczy realizujący grant Nieupamiętnione miejsca ludobójstwa i ich wpływ na pamięć zbiorową, tożsamość kulturową, postawy etyczne i relacje międzykulturowe we współczesnej Polsce (NPRH 2016-2020, Rozwój). PI w projektach: Polish Folk Art and the Holocaust: Perpetrator-Victim-Bystander Memory Transactions in the Polish-German Context (Beethoven, NCN/DFG, Humboldt Univ., z Magdaleną Waligórską, 2020-2025), Challenging Populist Truth-Making in Europe. The Role of Museums in a Digital “Post-Truth” European Society (Volkswagen, Humboldt Univ., kier. Christoph Bareither, 2020-2025). Uczestniczka projektu (co-PI) Partnerships: Thinking Through the Museum (2021-2028). Pracuje w zespole Balzan Bystanding Project (Bielefeld Univ, finansowane z nagrody przyznanej Saulowi Friedländerowi) (2022-2027, kier. Christina Morina). Współ-kuratorka wystawy Widok zza bliska. Inne obrazy Zagłady (2018-2019). Obecnie pracuje nad teorią nie-miejsc pamięci, postronnymi Zagłady, rozumieniem Holokaustu z perspektywy Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej i wizualnymi badaniami w kontekście ludobójstwa.

Roma Sendyka, professor, head of a research team at the Department of Anthropology of Literature and Cultural Research at the Jagiellonian University. She is co-founder and head of the Research Centre for Memory Cultures. She specializes in cultural theory, visual culture studies, and memory studies. Her current work focuses on “non-sites of memory” and visual approaches to genocide representation. She is the author of The Modern Essay: Studies in Historical Awareness of a Genre (2006), From “I” Culture to the Culture of the “Self” (2015), and co-editor of six volumes on memory studies. Her most recent publications are Beyond Camps. Non-Sites of Memory (2021) and (co-authored) Terribly Close. Polish Vernacular Artists Face the Holocaust (2023).
She was the principal investigator for the research project Uncommemorated Genocide Sites and their Impact on Collective Memory, Cultural Identity, Ethical Attitudes, and Intercultural Relations in Contemporary Poland (NCN, 2016-19), as well as the Awkward Objects of Genocide project under the auspices of the grant Transmitting Contentious Cultural Heritages with the Arts: From Intervention to Co-Production (TRACES, 2016-2019, Horizon2020). From 2020 she is co-PI (with Magdalena Waligórska) in the DFG-NCN project (Beethoven Classic program) in a follow-up project: Polish Folk Art and the Holocaust: Perpetrator – Victim – Bystander Memory Transactions in the Polish German Context. From 2020 she has cooperated as co-PI with the CARMAH (Humboldt University) team in the project Challenging Populist Truth-Making in Europe. The Role of Museums in a Digital, Post-Truth‘ European Society. She is a co-investigator on the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant-funded project, Thinking Through the Museum (TTTM): A Partnership Approach to Curating Difficult Knowledge in Public (2021-2028). From 2022 she is a researcher in Balzan Bystanding Project (Bielefeld Univ.).
She has received awards from the Kościuszko Foundation, the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation, the ERSTE Stiftung, DAAD, and the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure. She was a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago in 2011, at the NIOD in Amsterdam in 2013, and at the Humboldt University in Berlin in 2022.
